what will be included in our devotional booklet?
In the ELCA Church, Lent is a 40 day season of spiritual preparation, repentance, and reflection leading to Easter. The 40 day Lenten season focuses on remembering Jesus' sacrifice and on renewing baptismal promises. One of the ways these promises are renewed is through daily prayer, referred to as Devotions. These daily prayers begin on Ash Wednesday (February 18th this year) and conclude on Easter Sunday (April 5th).
Our Lenten Devotional booklets will focus on Jesus' "I Am" statements in the book of John in the Bible:
1) John 4:26 - (when Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at the well) “Then Jesus declared to her, I who speak to you am he
(the Messiah).”
2) John 6:35 & 6:48 - “Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life.”
John 6:41 & 6:51 - “I am the living bread that came down from heaven.”
3) John 8:12 - “He said, “I am the light of the world.’ “
John 9:5 - “While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
4) John 10:7 & 10:9 - “I am the gate for the sheep.”…”whoever enter through me will be saved.”
5) John 11:14 - “I am the good shepherd.”
6) John 11:25 - (Jesus says to Martha) “I am the resurrection and the life.”
7) John 14:6 - “Jesus answered, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”
8) John 15:1 & 15:5 - “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.” “I am the vine and you are the branches.”
Submit your devotional for any one or even more than one of the eight "I Am" statements above by completing the form below. You may upload an image that you would like included with the form or you may just write your devotional. Your devotional can be a reflection of the statement, a hymn that reminds you of the statement, a drawing or picture that makes you think of the statement, or even a personal story. There are no right or wrong ways to answer these statements. Submit one or submit more than one. Pastor Kate will review each submission and deteremine the best day for each. Once she has done this, Glenda, our Office Manager will put the devotionals together into a booklet for everyone to pick up.
Submissions are due by February 8th to allow us time to put the booklet together in time for Ash Wednesday.
